  현재 밝혀진 많은 물질대사 경로는 수많은 노선이 얽힌 서울의 지하철 노선도처럼 출발점과 도착지를 잇는 여러 선택 가능한 경로가 존재합니다. 저의 연구는 마치 지하철역 하나가 폐쇄되었을 때 이용객들이 어떤 다른 경로를 가장 많이 사용할지 살펴보는 것과 같이, 선천성 대사이상 (inborn errors of metabolism)에 관련된 효소 유전자의 돌연변이로 인해 전체 물질대사가 어떻게 재구성되는가를 살펴보는 것으로 시작되었습니다.

  NAD+ (Nicotinamide nucleotide)는 우리 몸의 다양한 세포에서 에너지 대사 및 여러 신호전달 체계에 관여하는 주요 대사산물 중 하나입니다. 특히, 암세포의 경우 대사 (metabolism)의 변화가 특징적으로 잘 알려져 있는데, NAD+에 대한 높은 의존성 또한 꾸준히 연구되어 왔습니다. 이에 따라 고형암 및 혈액암의 치료전략으로 세포 내 NAD+ 생성 과정을 방해하는 다양한 약물들이 개발되었습니다.
