Oligodendrocyte precursor cell (OPC)는 progenitor cell population임에도 불구하고 일생 동안 central nervous system (CNS)에서 새로운 myelinating oligodendrocyte를 만들어 낼 수 있는 특별한 cell type입니다. 하지만 OPC 분화와 oligodendrocyte 형성 속도는 노화와 함께 급격히 감소하며, 이는 Multiple Sclerosis와 같은 demyelinating 질환과 신경퇴행성 질환에서의 지속적인 myelin 손실에 기여할 수 있습니다.

바이러스나 세균 등 병원균이 숙주에 침입하면 이를 방어하는 과정에서 염증반응이 일어나는데, 염증반응은 병원균에 존재하는 인자 (pathogen-associated molecular patter, PAMP)를 숙주 내 선천성 면역 수용체 (pattern recognition receptor, PRR)가 인식하여 개시되게 됩니다. 이 때, 숙주 세포는 PAMP 등을 인지하여 면역반응을 활성화시키기 위해 danger-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) 등 다양한 세포 내 분자들을 분비하는데, 과도한 DAMP의 분비는 주변 세포의 pyroptosis와 같은 세포사멸 등을 유발하여 패혈증의 원인이 되기도 합니다.

클론성 (clonality)란 한 세포에서부터 파생된, 동일한 성질을 갖고 있는 세포들을 이르는 집합적 명칭입니다. 유전체학적 정의는 DNA 정보가 동일한 세포 집단을 일컫습니다. 예를 들어, 어떤 암세포가 계속 증식한다면 그 세포들은 모두 DNA 정보가 동일하므로 같은 클론이라고 말할 수 있습니다. 그러다가 일정 세포들이 새로운 돌연변이를 얻은 후 또 증식한다면, 이는 부모-자식 간의 관계에 있는 서브클론 (subclone)이라고 할 수 있지요.
