감각은 여러 원인에 의해 병적인 통증으로 변할 수 있습니다. 대표적인 예로 신경 손상에 의해 나타나는 신경병성 통증을 들 수 있는데, 이 병을 앓는 환자는 정상적인 생활을 하기 어려울 정도로 엄청난 통증을 느끼며 살아갑니다. 이렇게 통증이 비정상적으로 증폭되는 여러 기전이 밝혀져 왔으나 아직까지 완전한 치료법은 없는 상태이며, 환자는 해소되지 않는 통증에 의해 끝없이 고통받습니다. 말초 변성이 원인이 되어 증상이 시작되었더라도, 통증이 만성화됨에 따라 뇌 수준에서의 변화가 중요한 역할을 담당하게 됩니다. 본 연구는 말초 신경 손상
