Brain decoding of spontaneous thought: Predictive modeling of self-relevance and valence using personal narratives

Abstract
The contents and dynamics of spontaneous thought are important factors for personality traits and mental health. However, assessing spontaneous thoughts is challenging due to their unconstrained nature, and directing participants' attention to report their thoughts may fundamentally alter them. Here, we aimed to decode two key content dimensions of spontaneous thought-self-relevance and valence-directly from brain activity. To train functional MRI-based predictive models, we used individually generated personal stories as stimuli in a story-reading task to mimic narrative-like spontaneous thoughts (
n = 49). We then tested these models on multiple test datasets (total
n = 199). The default mode, ventral attention, and frontoparietal networks played key roles in the predictions, with the anterior insula and midcingulate cortex contributing to self-relevance prediction and the left temporoparietal junction and dorsomedial prefrontal cortex contributing to valence prediction. Overall, this study presents brain models of internal thoughts and emotions, highlighting the potential for the brain decoding of spontaneous thought.

fMRI 기반 머신 러닝을 통한 자유로운 생각에 담긴 감정 예측 모델 개발 [Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA] 생각의 흐름은 무작위적으로 느껴질지 몰라도, 대부분 자신과 관련되고 감정이 담긴 경우가 많기 때문에, 생각의 내용과 역동성은 성격 특성과 정신 건강을 이해하기 위한 중요한 요소이다. 본 연구는 자연스러운 생각의 두 가지 주요 내용 차원인 ‘자기 관련도’와 ‘긍·부정 정서’를 뇌 활성으로부터 직접 예측할 수 있는 모델을 만들기 위하여, 무의식적 사고와 가장 유사한 형태인 개인 맞춤형 이야기 자극을 일대일 인터뷰를 통하여 만들었다. 참가자가 fMRI 기기 안에서 이야기를 읽는 동안의 뇌 활동 패턴을 기반으로 각 참가자가 느끼는 자기 관련도와 긍·부정 정서를 예측할 수 있는 모델을 개발했고, 해당 예측 모델은 새로운 뇌의 활동 패턴을 대입했을 때도 그 사람이 매 순간 느끼는 정서를 성공적으로 예측했다. 더 나아가 외부 자극 없이 자유롭게 생각하거나 휴식을 취하는 동안 수집된 약 200명의 뇌 활동 패턴에서도 유의미한 수준으로 두 가지를 읽어냈다. 본 연구는 전반적으로 내적 사고와 감정에 대한 뇌 기반 모델을 제시하며, 뇌 표상을 통하여 자유로운 생각을 읽어내는 것의 가능성과 잠재력을 보여준다.- 김홍지(성균관대학교)

뇌 영상으로 생각의 정서 예측하는 모델 개발
우리의 뇌는 한순간도 쉬지 않고 활동하며 이러한 뇌의 활동은 우리에게 “생각”으로 경험된다. 우리의 생각은 과거에서 미래로, 한 가지 개념에서 또 다른 개념으로 계속해서 이동한다. 자연스러운 생각의 흐름은 무작위적인 생각의 편린처럼 느껴질지 몰라도, 사실 대부분 감정이 담겨있고 자기 자신과 관련되어 있거나, 내적 욕구와 목표 등을 반영할 때가 많다. 그래서 생각의 흐름에 담긴 내용과 감정 상태는 개인의 성격 및 인지 특성, 정신 건강 등을 알려주는 중요한 지표가 될 수 있다. 하지만 생각의 흐름은 의식의 제약 없이 자발적으로 발생하기 때문에 사람들에게 지금 무슨 생각을 하는지 물어보는 것만으로도 생각의 내용을 바꿀 수 있어 연구하는 데 어려움이 있다.
