Abstract
Imbalances between excitation and inhibition (E/I imbalance) in synaptic transmission and neural circuits have been implicated in autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). E/I imbalances are frequently observed in animal models of ASDs, and their correction normalizes key autistic-like phenotypes in these animals. These results suggest that E/I imbalance may contribute to the development and maintenance of ASDs and represent an important therapeutic target.
Key Words : excitation/inhibition balance; autism spectrum disorders; synapse; circuit; mouse models; psychiatric disorders
