Our study examined whether very small plastic particles, specifically 20 to 50 nm polystyrene nanoplastics, can enter the body through the skin. Using a 3D human epidermal model and a chronic dermal exposure mouse model, we found that even low cosmetic-like doses activated inflammation and skin-aging pathways, with hundreds of genes altered and clear thinning of the epidermis.

As plastic pollution is regarded as an emerging threat to the respiratory health of living beings, we designed this study to explain the bio-distribution of micro-sized polystyrene and nano-sized polystyrene after inhalation into the lungs. We chose polystyrene because it was one of major components of all the daily-use products and also it was found inside the human lungs proven in a study previously reported.
