In nature there are various compounds which elicit the taste sensation in animals. These include macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and micronutrients, such as minerals. Although vitamins are typically thought of as micronutrients, it is unknown how they are perceived. Thus, in our study entitled “The Taste of Vitamin C in Drosophila”, we endeavored ourselves to identify the molecular and cellular mechanism of vitamin C perception using the highly tractable model organism Drosophila melanogaster.
