1. 논문관련 분야의 소개, 동향, 전망을 설명, 연구과정에서 생긴 에피소드
Neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), have witnessed a significant increase in the number of affected individuals worldwide. With the global population aging, these conditions pose growing challenges for healthcare systems and individuals alike. Consequently, understanding the underlying mechanisms driving these diseases becomes crucial.
My research has primarily focused on unraveling the role of oxidative stress, which has been implicated in the pathogenesis of PD and AD. In particular, I and co-researchers have explored the involvement of astrocytes mediating oxidative stress responses, as they play a significant role in disease progression. A noteworthy discovery from our study, as published in Redox Biology, is about of NOX4 as a key denominator to induce neuroinflammatory cytokines.
Through investigating these underlying mechanisms, we can gain valuable insights into disease progression, and we hope that it might pave the way for the development of innovative diagnostic tools, preventive measures, and the identification of potential therapeutic targets. Ultimately, these advancements can contribute to improved outcomes for patients.
2. 연구를 진행했던 소속기관 또는 연구소에 대해 소개 부탁드립니다.
During my Ph.D. journey, I am on track to graduate in 2023. Since 2020, I have been studying at Soonchunhyang University under the expert guidance of Professor Sun Shin Yi. Our laboratory is dedicated to utilizing laboratory animal models to study various diseases, with my specific focus on neurosciences and experimental research aimed at unraveling the mysteries of the brain. Our investigations particularly related with neurodegenerative diseases, such as PD, AD. The primary objective of our lab members is to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms of these diseases and to identify novel biomarkers for their rapid diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes. Additionally, we assess the potential of bioactive materials for the development of new drugs and supplement foods. Through these research endeavors, we aim to contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of translational neuroscience and ultimately improve human health outcomes. The research environment at Soonchunhyang University in Korea is renowned for its vibrant scientific community and cutting-edge technologies. It has played a crucial role in fostering groundbreaking research ideas and facilitating their successful execution.
3. 연구 활동 하시면서 평소 느끼신 점 또는 자부심, 보람
Doing research in any branch of basic science can be a challenging and sometimes painful process. Doing research in any branch of basic science can be a challenging and sometimes arduous process. Constantly defining research directions, facing failures, and redirecting efforts can be tough. However, as a scientist, I find pride and reward in moments of learning and accomplishment. Formulating research hypotheses, conducting experiments to prove them, and announcing the results are particularly meaningful and fulfilling. These milestones provide clarity, purpose, and a sense of contribution to the scientific community. Despite the challenges, being a scientist allows me to make a positive impact, collaborate with colleagues, continuously learn and grow, and contribute to scientific knowledge. Ultimately, my sense of pride and fulfillment in conducting research arises from the ability to explore, discover, and make a tangible impact on the world by contributing to knowledge.
4. 이 분야로 진학하려는 후배들 또는 유학준비생들에게 도움이 되는 말씀을 해 주신다면?
As a foreigner who has studied abroad, I would like to offer some valuable advice. Remember, your potential is not defined by your location. What truly matters is your personal drive and the passion that fuels you.
Just like an uncut diamond, you have the potential to shine brightly in your chosen path, but it requires effort and preparation. Invest in self-preparation, stay updated with advancements, and strive to become the "only expert" in your research field.
Success is not limited by your nationality or location, embrace opportunities, connect with mentors, and think globally. With dedication, skill cultivation, opportunity-seeking, and a nurtured global perspective, you can make a significant impact in the scientific community.
5. 연구 활동과 관련된 앞으로의 계획이 있으시다면?
Based on the results of our current study, our laboratory is actively engaged in ongoing research activities encompassing various studies. Fueled by my deep passion and fascination for comprehending the therapeutic and underlying mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases, our primary objective is to shed light on the intricate processes that contribute to the development of neurodisorders and other related conditions that currently lack available treatments. I am committed to continuously generating and validating new hypotheses, leveraging rapidly changing technologies to unravel the crucial clues that will bring us closer to the development of effective treatments and interventions.

First and foremost, it is the dream of many researchers to have their name published in "Hanbitsa” and it is my great honor to have my name included in here.
I am grateful to my advisor, Professor Sun Shin Yi, and all my co-authors who have been with me throughout this research journey. Their guidance and collaboration have been invaluable in completing this study.
I am delighted to have had the opportunity to study at Soonchunhyang University, Korea. Furthermore, My research and educational journey could not have been successful and stable without the funds and support from the BK21 FOUR program.
Being able to immerse myself in a vibrant academic environment and engage with fellow researchers has been an enriching experience. I extend my thanks to my friends in the laboratory who have consistently provided support, cared for my well-being while living abroad, and shared cultural experiences, creating cherished memories together.
