Fish waste generated in South Korea needs to be properly discarded. Our study began with the idea that what if we feed fish waste into the already operating anaerobic digester while maintaining its original operating condition? Therefore, we, firstly, operated Lab inoculum that was fed with the mixture of domestic sludge and food waste with a ratio 4:1 (referred to as 1o substrate). The lab inoculum had been operated for 9 months and the reactor had reached the stable stage. After that, we started adding fish waste to the reactor, and the next day, we fed it with its original substrate (1o substrate). The next fish waste addition was when the digester performance returned to its original process performance. We repeated the fish waste addition for 15 cycles. Our results showed that 1% and 5% fish waste augmentation to the operating anaerobic digestor improved the process performance compared to the control. The microbial analysis showed that there was a shift in the bacterial community in response to fish waste augmentation. During the experiment, we had a chance to visit a local fish farm in Pohang to get the dead fish waste. It was an interesting experience although the dead fish was terribly smelly.
I am now pursuing my Ph.D. degree in Bioengineers for Environmental Science and Technology Laboratory (B.E.S.T.) in the Division of Environmental Science and Engineering, POSTECH. Our lab is mainly focusing on waste management through anaerobic digestion. Currently, we are dealing with many types of waste, such as fish waste, food waste, domestic sludge, and bioplastics. We also try to apply machine learning to predict the digesters’ process performance as well.
People keep discarding waste but not many people want to treat or deal with it properly because waste is smelly and dirty. Therefore, our world is now full of waste that needs to be properly treated. I believe that waste management study is very important as we only have this world as our home. We must make our only home clean not only for us but also for the next generation.
I would like to encourage graduate students, especially international students who are currently living in South Korea. We all know that living abroad is not easy. Apart from the difficulties of graduate study, we, as a foreigner, also need to face difficulties from cultural differences, language barriers, etc. Having work and life balance is very important. Do not devote your entire life just to working in a lab. Go out and live your life, and enjoy free time with your family and friends. Importantly, put your health as the priority. You must have a healthy body and mind to conduct good research.
We are working on a similar scheme but increasing the fish waste addition concentration to see if the process performance will be inhibited. We will try to utilize machine learning to predict the process performance of the digester in response to fish waste addition. We also would like to get the detailed information regarding microbial activities using metatranscriptome analysis. We hope to apply this knowledge to full-scale digester operations.
I thank my academic advisor, Prof. Seokhwan Hwang, for giving me an opportunity to conduct the research. I also would like to express my gratitude to my colleagues who always help me during my stay in South Korea. I appreciate the great contribution of my second author, Arma Yulisa, throughout the experimental period. Also, the project manager, Sanghyeok Park, for his hard work during the project period.
