한빛사 인터뷰
1. Can you please briefly summarize the paper?
NO-enriched plasma-activated water (NO-PAW) was prepared using microwave plasma-generated gas. NO-PAW inactivated human coronavirus 229E. and showed no significant toxicity below 2000 μM against MRC-5 lung host cells. NO-PAW reduced viral RNA load and spike protein expression in lung host cells at less than 100 μM concentration. This treatment elevated antivirus response gene expression in human host cells. Altogether our findings provide evidence of an initiation point for further progress toward the clinical development of antiviral treatments, including coronaviruses.
2. Can you please tell us the main difficulties you had in the laboratory work and how you overcame them?
Optimization of coronavirus in various types of host cell cultures was a difficult step. However, experiments were smoothly done after the standardization of culture. Another difficult task was to search and arrange specific antibodies against virus or host cell markers, which had taken 4-5 months to arrive even after selection.
3. Please introduce your laboratory, university, or organization to bio-researchers in Korea.
Department of Electrical and Biological Physics and Plasma Bioscience Research Center at Kwangwoon university situated in northern Seoul. Our department and research center are focused on various types of nonthermal plasma sources and their biological and medical applications. Several researchers in our department are working in plasma physics, plasma chemistry, biology, and plasma environmental engineering areas.
4. Please tell us your experiences and your thoughts related to research activities abroad.
The research environment at our university is much better than many other universities abroad. Several nice equipment and facilities are available inside the university or nearby institutions. University and department administration continuously support faculty and staff for research-related matters.
5. Can you provide some advice for younger scientists who have plans to study abroad?
Young research students can start with in-depth research on their plans and take guidance from their seniors who already had experience on study abroad. Research students can choose their supervisor based on the past 5-year publication record in their field of interest. Considering all these factors it is advisable to start planning and preparing in advance for their study abroad. It may need at least 1 year to start planning and executing their plans.
6. Future plan?
I will try to publish high-quality papers and patents for industrial applications at my University in the future. Product-based research including the advancement of fundamental knowledge will be my target for future studies.
