My research area is Molecular Plant-Microbe Interaction. There are only certain species of pathogens that can successfully infect and colonize host plants. Therefore, most of plants are resistant to most of pathogens (Bacteria, Fungi, Oomycete etc.). Arabidopsis thaliana is well-known model host to study plant-microbe interaction. Hyaloperonospora parasitica is naturally occurring oomycete pathogen of Arabidopsis thaliana and it has evolved with its host plants throughout the natural history. It is clear that effector proteins from pathogens are translocated into host cells and suppress host immunity to proliferate in the host intercellular spaces. Increasing number of laboratories in the world has focused on the functions of the effector proteins in host cells. These efforts will shade lights on how pathogens and their hosts have evolved together in nature in the future.
There was a competition between two labs on the same project and we decided to publish together in the same journal as back-to-back papers. However our paper has been accepted whereas the other was rejected (the competing paper will be published in PNAS in Jan 2008) by Plant Cell. When we submitted our papers to P Cell in September I was so worrying about my paper but now just relieved.
My institute is Sainsbury Laboratory (www.tsl.ac.uk) which is located in the site of John Innes Centre (www.jic.ac.uk; but they are administratively separate institutes due to the different funding bodies). Sainsbury laboratory is focusing on the researches of plant-microbe interactions. There are currently five group leaders including David Balcombe and Jonathan Jones who are the leading scientist in plant biology field.
Personally it was a great pleasure to work with a scientist like Jonathan Jones as a supervisor and impressed by how they approach to solve the biological questions. I am mainly working with model organisms but this experience will definitely help me understand how crop plants resist against pathogens in the future. I am also proud of my research topics that will benefit our future to maintain sustainable agriculture.
I think it is very important for young scientists (including myself) to have experiences in the leading laboratories in the given research field. In addition, it will be crucial to have communication and presentation skills in the future specially as a member of international research community. Therefore, it will be very important for young scientists to experience the culture, language as well as science in abroad.
So far, I have focused on bacterial pathogenesis in plants but in the next couple of years I am planning to spend most of my time on oomycete pathogenesis in model plants such as Arabisopsis thaliana since oomycete pathogens are economically much more important than bacterial pathogens in plants.
I would like to thank Sainsbury laboratory and Jonathan Jones for the opportunities and supports that I've had in UK since 2004.
