1. Can you please briefly summarize the paper?

SiPore21 is an oral gel containing engineered mesoporous silica particles. These particles are micron-sized and tailored to have pores with a specific diameter, which are slightly larger than the size of digestive enzymes but smaller than undigested food. Owing to this unique physical structure and the consequent diffusion of enzymes into the pores, SiPore21 functions as a molecular sieve that physically separates digestive enzymes from undigested or partially digested food in the gastrointestinal tract. This physical separation reduces the enzymatic breakdown of carbohydrates and fats, thereby lowering nutrient absorption.

The SHINE clinical trial (randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, N= 318) demonstrated that the oral administration of SiPore21 led to clinically meaningful improvements across multiple metabolic domains, including glycaemic control, body composition, and lipid profiles, accompanied by a reduction in metabolic risk and a stabilisation of glycaemic status. Together with its favourable safety profile and strong adherence, SiPore21 represents a promising, multifaceted, non-pharmacological option to support individuals with prediabetes, those in the early stages of T2D, and metabolic health more broadly. Its localised gastrointestinal mode of action, without systemic absorption, further enhances its appeal for individuals seeking alternatives to pharmacological therapies.

3. Please tell us your experiences and your thoughts related to research activities abroad. 

상대적으로 규모가 작은 기업에서 수백 명의 참가자가 참여하는 임상시험을 수행하는 일은 결코 쉽지 않았습니다. 임상시험 설계와 평가변수 설정부터 연구윤리심의 승인, 참가자 모집, 시험용 제품 공급, 자료 수집과 데이터베이스 마감, 그리고 최종적으로 논문이 출판되기까지 어느 하나 어려움이 없는 과정은 없었습니다.

그럼에도 임상시험의 거의 모든 과정에 크고 작게 참여하며 기여할 수 있었다는 점에 큰 감사와 보람을 느낍니다. 연구의 기획부터 결과 발표까지 전 과정을 가까이에서 경험하면서, 각 단계가 어떻게 유기적으로 연결되어 하나의 연구 성과로 완성되는지를 배울 수 있었습니다.

이처럼 임상시험의 시작부터 끝까지 폭넓게 참여할 수 있었던 것은 규모가 작은 기업에서만 얻을 수 있는 매우 귀중한 경험이었다고 생각합니다. 여러 어려움을 하나씩 해결하며 연구를 끝까지 완수하고, 그 결과를 논문으로 발표하게 된 것은 연구자로서 큰 자부심으로 남아 있습니다.

4. Can you provide some advice for younger scientists who have plans to study abroad?  

국내외를 막론하고 좋은 연구는 좋은 인간관계와 감사하는 마음에서 출발한다고 생각합니다. 연구는 결코 혼자만의 힘으로 완성할 수 있는 일이 아니기 때문입니다. 하나의 성과가 나오기까지는 동료 연구자와 공동연구자, 연구를 지원해 주는 여러 구성원의 수고와 노력이 함께합니다. 따라서 연구를 통해 만난 분들과 신뢰를 쌓고 좋은 관계를 이어가는 것은 우수한 연구 성과를 만들어 내는 데 매우 중요한 요소라고 생각합니다.

또한 연구 과정에 직간접적으로 도움을 주신 모든 분께 감사하는 마음을 갖는 것이 중요합니다. 예를 들어 연구실을 청소하고 관리해 주시는 분들 역시 우리가 쾌적한 환경에서 실험하고 연구에 집중할 수 있도록 도와주시는 소중한 구성원입니다. 이처럼 눈에 잘 드러나지 않는 도움까지도 당연하게 여기지 않고 감사의 마음을 표현하려는 자세가 필요합니다.

전문지식과 연구 역량을 쌓는 것뿐만 아니라, 함께 일하는 사람들을 존중하고 신뢰를 형성하며 관계를 꾸준히 이어가는 노력도 중요하게 생각하셨으면 합니다. 이러한 태도와 관계는 좋은 연구를 가능하게 할 뿐 아니라, 긴 연구자의 길을 지속해 나가는 데에도 큰 힘이 되어 줄 것이라고 생각합니다.

5. Future plan? 

저희 회사의 플랫폼 기술은 이번 논문에서 다룬 대사질환 분야의 의학적 활용뿐만 아니라, 다양한 분야로 확장될 수 있는 큰 가능성을 지니고 있습니다. 앞으로도 기존의 접근 방식으로는 해결하기 어려웠던 문제에 저희 기술과 제품을 적용하고, 이를 뒷받침할 수 있는 과학적 근거를 지속적으로 축적해 나가고자 합니다.

궁극적으로는 새로운 분야에 새로운 방식으로 접근함으로써 기존에 없던 연구 및 제품 영역을 개척하고, 하나의 새로운 분야를 만들어 가는 데 기여하는 것이 목표입니다.
